Below left:
The completed grooves in the two halves of the central column. All being well, these two 1” wide by 1/2” deep grooves will form the desired 1” square hole.
Below right:
To make sure the two grooves lined up correctly during the gluing I put a couple of pins in the waste area and lopped off their heads. A quick squeeze with a clamp during the dry run and I was all set. I took care to mark where the pins were on the outside of the column...

Behold, the square hole! You can also see where I started ploughing the groove on the wrong face. Ooops. Still, I caught it in time - just. If it had been with the router, all would have been lost I think...

The glued-up column blank now needed to be turned to shape on the lathe.
Left:
In order to have somewhere for the lathe centres to grip, I planed up a pair of tapered softwood plugs to fit the holes.
